![]() ![]() This is too much trust and is bound to break at some point.Īnd in addition to these social problems caused by centralization, what about the technical ones? What happens when the BOINC servers are down, ie. You cannot give power to a central entity (BOINC servers) to control distribution of money. Morale of the story: absolute power corrupts absolutely. At this point the situation is a mess and is no different than Ripple/Stellar to whom this exact scenario happened: part of the Ripple community abandoned Ripple and followed Jed McCaleb's Stellar fork. Maybe they would try to set up a new entity to run a new set of BOINC servers. Maybe they would try to abandon trusting these BOINC servers, but how? They would not all agree on a solution. The Gridcoin community would be upset and disagree with this. But eventually they would interfere with the rankings for their own financial benefits, either plainly maliciously, or with excuses to appear semi-legitimate (they could say "since we run the BOINC servers, we deserve a share of the profits"). They would give appearances of operating legitimately at first. Or they could offer to outright purchase the domain names and entity managing them, maybe they would even hire the staff running the servers. So many people would be interested in gaining control of the BOINC servers. A good chunk of this million dollars would be distributed based on BOINC rankings. Here is a thought experiment for you to understand: imagine if Gridcoin was as big and as valuable as Bitcoin, which has about $1 million dollars worth of bitcoins mined every day. ↳ V7.5.This "little bit" of centralization makes Gridcoin sufficiently brittle that it completely annihilates its chance of being widely successful AND stable.↳ V7.6.x Public Release Windows/Linux/MacOS X.Don't get me started about the lack of ECC RAM for almost all consumer PC's. We see this quite a bit in BOINC too, and also the Gridcoin client is sensitive to machine problems, because it does hash checking of just about all critical data structures, so detects memory problems that are subtle and would not normally be seen. I completely agree about the test of system stability with intensive distributed computing. Where would be the best place to create the thread for best visiibility? We are already fielding a number of questions on our Discord server #help channel. We are modifying the Gridcoin guides to include setup and will be linking those on our main site. These folks are also familiar with the hardware requirements of distributed computing, as many of the BOINC projects have similar demands on the CPU and GPU to also have participants who are interested in Gridcoin, and then finally we have brand new folks who are complete "newbies". Many folks coming to are experienced BOINC crunchers and already have Gridcoin set up. But having a single thread that people could copy/paste to point them in the proper direction of those questions related to the Gridcoin rather than folding side of the questions would maybe save people a lot of time and typing. ![]() People here are willing to help with the usual setup questions, help them with specific setups and other such things. But I've seen a lot of posts about people wanting those here in this forum to answer all their questions about the various coins, why they haven't been paid, why their system works on BOINC and not here, etc, etc. This is input from just another folder, I'm not connected to any staff or official representative. In reality the problem is that many people don't have stable systems and taking the time to ensure they stay that way. Those with unstable systems will find the flaws quickly in most cases, and it's not uncommon to see people claiming software or execution is flawed and that is the problem. Power consumption for those with capable systems can be high is someone is set up to fold for maximum points, especially those that have powerful GPU's. Without altering installations or preferences, can tax a system much harder, using both a great deal of CPU and/or GPU resources. I think clarification of demands is also a good idea. Then list the direct support links for those with questions that related to the payouts, setup, etc that are unique to the Gridcoin. Make it clear what the policy is on the effort (usually that they neither endorse nor discourage such use) and how it's not intended to have any negative impact on folding efforts. I'd start a unique thread with some clarification about the role of as it related to the Gridcoin. Some suggestions if either of you is still watching for input. ![]()
